Regency Portrait “A Squire And His Family” Oil on Canvas with nice gilt wood frame with beaded and egg and dart frame. Charming family portrait with husband and wife and children. Most likely of James Bate and family of Claremont, Exeter and by William Allison. Cataloged and once in the Paul Mellon Collection. Sold Bonhams June 7, 1973 and Christies June 27, 1980. James Bate was a captain of the 1st Regiment of the Loyal London Volunteers and died in 1861. Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1817. Signed and dated 1817.
